All I want for Christmas is...a healthy family!

Last week (Wednesday) little MG came down with a touch of a stomach bug. Scott, of course, was conveniently out of town (the way it always happens) when she started vomiting at 2:00 am. She proceeded to get sick every 1/2 hour from that point forward until about 10:00 am. By then - we had an entire system...ponytail (CHECK) - headband by the toilet (CHECK) and a bowl by the bed (just in case). It was a difficult few hours, but all in all THANKFULLY (somewhat) short lived. No fever...and by 10:00 am she was bopping around the house like her usual self.

Monday I came down with some kind of vicious stomach bug...perhaps the same one MG had. Vicious is not an exaggeration. I seriously thought I was going to die. At one point I literally thought - "Just let me lay here and drown in the toilet water I just got sick in. PLEASE!" Then I got a tap, tap, tap at my shoulder. It was Mariah smiling "Mommy - you make me so happy. You got sick in the toilet. Good job Mommy! You need to wear my headband otherwise...Mommy you will have to take a bath." How could I not feel better after that? My daughter is precious!

MG took care of me all night long. Rubbing my back (while proceeding to climb and bounce all over the bed), getting me extra covers when I was cold, waking me up to make sure my tummy felt better, and insisting I watch Hannah Montana with her so she could be close to Mommy. Every single time I got sick - there she was to coach me through. Mariah will make a really good Mommy someday! She's so darn cute!

Terrible Threes?

So...everyone is telling me terrible threes. Terrible twos - heard of them, but terrible threes? Apparently - it isn't uncommon for toddlers to experience their terrible twos while they are three. Mariah was rarely a difficult two year old - she had her moments, but overall it wasn't too bad. We have come to a bump in the road. Little Miss Diva has declared her independence! Clear the way - Miss Thang comin at ya! Mariah will tell you what she wants, when she wants it and how she wants it! Her knew phrase is "I don't want to." Mommy's reply of "Well I don't want to pay taxes but I have to" doesn't seem to compute with a three year old :-) We've been comparing notes with other parents at daycare - seems her little clique of friends all seem to be experiencing a case of Bossy Pants! The funniest thing is it seems to have happend with the flick of switch. Mariah turned three and BOOM!

At times I can't help but laugh when she is having a melt down - even when she is mad she is so gosh darn cute! Not to mention...when she is having a melt down, it certainly helps Mommy remain calm to chuckle a bit!

Mamma Worries

One of my least favorite things about being a Mommy is the worrying. I am a worrier. As Moms it is our job to worry, but I have special worry talents and can take it to a whole new worry level!

When something is not right in Mariah's little world, I want to fix it. I am not talking about when Mariah gets upset because Mommy or Daddy says no to a candy bar or yet another episode of Hannah Montana, but rather when you just know something is off. Something is just off with MG and Scott and I are at our wits ends trying to figure it all out.

Sleepless nights, having potty accidents again (despite being potty trained), emotional and behavioral outburst at school and at home and really difficult drop offs at school (daycare).

So, as a parent do I chalk it up as developmental? Changes at home? Changes at school? Sickness? My head is spinning. Where do I begin?

My tactic is simple. I am attacking from all angles. SUPER MOMMY POWER - I can and WILL figure this out!

First I called the Doctor's office. Perhaps Mariah has a bladder infection that is causing all the accidents and grumpiness. That would explain a lot. Right? I am grumpy and emotional when I am sick.

Next, a call to the Director at daycare about the new daycare teacher in Mariah's room. I don't have anything solid to report other than I am personally uncomfortable around this teacher so perhaps my child is as well. Mariah has had ample time to get adjusted to this teacher, yet continues to have meltdowns when we drop her off in the morning. Lets just say it may be a personality conflict between Mariah and this particular teacher. She's a close talker and she tries REALLY hard to engage in conversation about somewhat strange things....

Or could it be Mariah has picked up on the sadness in our house regarding the loss of Scott's mother? While I hesitate to shrug this off (I know they say kids sense sadness) - we have really sheltered her from everything. She doesn't understand death. She did not attend the memorial service. We talk about "MayMay" to keep her memory alive...granted we do talk about MayMay being in heaven which is way up high. But to a little girl who stands three feet off the ground...Mom and Daddy are 'way up high' too.

Perhaps it is all the talk about her going to a classroom in a few weeks. She has historically struggled with classroom changes. She isn't having any emotional problems in that room that have been reported...and she told Scott and I she likes her new room.

The doctor just called and said her symptoms do not sound 'infectious' and they do not think she needs to be seen. Guess what Nurse Jenny...Mommy's on a mission, I apologize in advanced for my insistence. Never mind, no, no I don't. I simply insist she be checked out for a UTI. If it is negative I know what it's not! It will be one less worry on the Mommy worry chart.

The anxiety I feel seems so silly. She's going to be fine, I know this. But I am seriously fighting the urge to run to daycare right now and rescue her. Hold her. Talk to her. Let her know I am working on making it all better. Sigh. I worry too much.

Best Friends

My angelic daughter told me on Friday that I was her best friend. I think my heart literally melted. I didn't even know she knew how to say 'Best Friend.' Can she be anymore adorable?

Thanks to my parents, I have been reminded time and time again to treasure these moments for they do grow up to become teenagers and their view on your relationship changes!

Princess Mariah

So we celebrated Mariah's third birthday this past Saturday. With the passing of Scott's Mom on Tuesday, it was bittersweet. Scott and I decided to proceed with the party as that is what we felt Marianne (Scott's mom) would have wanted us to do. It served as a good distraction and offered all of us some much needed smiles and laughter!

Mariah's party was princess themed (per her request). While this was her request...I took it and ran with it and kicked into major girly girl mode! From the tumble bus to a visit from Snow White herself, we have memories that will last forever! Yes. Yes. I know...everyone keeps telling me, "Mariah is too little. She won't remember the party." Well to those people I say 'The look on Mariah's face when Snow White walked into the room was priceless. It is a memory I will personally remember for the rest of my life. We have photos. We have video. Mariah will remember because we will help her hold onto those memories. I believe it was worth it for the PURE EXCITEMENT and HAPPINESS she felt for that day, even if short lived. While tumbling on the tumble bus, Princess Mariah grabbed my leg, looked up with her big blue eyes, and said 'Mommy I'm happy. I love you,' and gave my leg a kiss before trotting off to do more gymnastics (and I have it on video). All the planning, all the money spent, was worth it right then and there.'

The passing of Scott's Mom has helped me realize how short life can be. You're only three once and can only believe in fairytales for so long! As I mentioned, the celebration was bittersweet. I miss not being able to call up Marianne and tell her all about the new things Mariah is doing or how amazing her party was - but I know Marianne was there with us in spirit...laughing the entire time. Marianne's passing did bring Scott's father home to us and I feel blessed he was able to share in Mariah's day. Mariah was able to celebrate her birthday with both 'Papas!' I think that is amazing. As adults, we take time with our parents and loved ones for granted. Thank you to Marianne for reminding me to cherish every moment I have with the ones I love.

The Vice Presidential debate last night has spurred many thoughts in Shelly world. I am proud that my daughter will witness this historical election. Regardless of the results, Mariah will be able to witness the first African American president or the first female Vice President. While the past eight years I have been ashamed of the leaders of this country, I am never ashamed to be American. How wonderful that we live in a country where the color of your skin or your gender does not matter?! We certainly have a long way to go - but I am thankful for Obama and Palin for breaking down the barriers and proving anything is possible!

The next month will be interesting to say the least. Despite my FULL support for Obama, a small part of me can't help but smile at the thought of Palin in office...the glass ceiling is finally breaking! An impactful message to little girls and women all over this country is being heard 'Women really can do anything.'

My sister is scheduled for her c-section on Election day - what a proud and historical day this is going to be for our family! President Mariah Musser? It has a nice ring!
